Newdelhi,Oct 15, 2026 13:36 ISTThe Supreme Court on Thursday sought responses from the Election Commission and other respondents concerning a petition filed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and multiple opposition figures, who alleged large-scale voter deletions and irregularities during the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.

Alongside seeking responses on the electoral roll claims, the court issued notices to Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and other figures regarding a separate petition challenging their recent march to the Supreme Court premises over the alleged irregularities. During the proceedings, the bench underscored that no one is permitted to browbeat the judiciary.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi directed notices to the Election Commission, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. The court noted that it would tag the new petition with pending cases while also examining the conduct of the petitioners.

During the hearing, legal counsel touched upon the opposition leaders' march to the Supreme Court earlier in the week to submit their petition concerning the revision process. Delhi has recently seen multiple demonstrations calling for the resignation of the chief election commissioner over the controversies surrounding the electoral rolls.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta addressed the bench regarding procedural matters and a separate contempt case involving the Union Home Secretary. The bench clarified that it was not taking formal cognizance of media reports regarding unconditional apologies offered before the court in that separate metro and train services matter.

Additionally, the bench issued notices to the Centre and other respondents concerning related petitions involving the Election Commission, including filings by leaders such as Asaduddin Owaisi. The court also agreed to review a petition contesting the removal of Jantar Mantar's designation as an authorized protest site. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the opposition leaders' petition alongside existing pending cases.
