Odisha governor-designate Braj Mohan Ram has sparked a political controversy following remarks that he intends to work toward strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party's Scheduled Caste wing and helping the political party secure additional votes. The statements have drawn criticism from the opposition Biju Janata Dal, which questioned his ability to remain impartial as a constitutional authority.

BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty voiced deep concern over the comments, stating that expressing an intention to bolster a specific party's organization in the state directly contradicts the fundamental principle that a governor must stay neutral.

In an interview conducted in Ranchi, Ram, a former three-time BJP legislator hailing from Palamu who succeeded Haribabu Kambhampati, outlined his plans to expand and activate the BJP's SC Morcha within Odisha once he takes office. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah for recognizing his dedication, noting his continued service to the party even after previously being denied an election ticket.

Alongside his political remarks, Ram stated that he intends to visit Odisha to evaluate the well-being of the Scheduled Caste community and advocate for impoverished residents. He promised to address fundamental challenges, seek justice for those who have been marginalized, and promote the state's overall prosperity.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the Odisha Assembly and BJD president Naveen Patnaik weighed in on the remarks via social media. Patnaik expressed his desire that Ram finds the dedication and resolve through divine guidance to serve the state impartially and maintain the dignity of his constitutional office while fulfilling his official responsibilities.
