New Delhi: Air India has established a dedicated team to discover expense reductions throughout its operations as the carrier navigates rising jet fuel prices, airspace closures, and repercussions from conflict in the Middle East. According to an internal memo sent to employees by CEO Tewolde Gebremariam, the airline has also tightened spending authorizations in an effort to manage outlays and shore up its financial standing.
The carrier is under intense pressure to achieve profitability once more following a financial loss exceeding $2 billion for the fiscal year ending in March. Furthermore, the organization is working to restore trust in its safety protocols after a fatal aviation accident in June 2025 that resulted in 260 deaths.
Within the memo, Gebremariam noted the launch of an initiative designed to prompt staff members to submit proposals for lowering expenses or boosting revenue. Personnel are being encouraged to exercise fiscal mindfulness and assume heightened accountability for expenditures during their daily routines. Air India additionally contends with logistical complications stemming from a Pakistani airspace prohibition and regional turmoil in the Middle East, factors that have necessitated extended detours, flight cancellations, and reductions in certain international schedules.
The carrier has also faced regulatory examination regarding compliance and safety deficiencies, which included instances of flying aircraft lacking valid certifications. Efforts to modernize the aging aircraft fleet have simultaneously encountered setbacks due to shortages involving passenger seats and other necessary components, thereby postponing cabin refurbishments.
In addition, the airline is reportedly pursuing the postponement of upcoming deliveries for hundreds of ordered aircraft to better control financial outlays. During August, reports indicated that Air India was seeking approximately $1.5 billion in new equity support from its parent entities, Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, amid escalating fiscal strains.
This cost-reduction drive arrives as Gebremariam addresses the demanding mandate of reversing the airline's fortunes, given that Air India has failed to post a profit since reverting to private ownership in 2022. While the newly formed task force evaluates savings opportunities across the entire enterprise, the employee engagement campaign seeks to embed financial prudence into routine operations during a difficult period defined by economic losses, logistical hurdles, and safety enhancements.
