Actor and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Kamal Haasan has issued a public response to recent social media comments made by SpaceX founder Elon Musk regarding Starlink's delayed commercial entry into India. Musk had previously alleged that his satellite internet company was being blocked in the country by oligarchs to protect a monopolistic market, while questioning regulatory timelines.

In his statement shared on social media, Haasan asserted that no billionaire, whether domestic or foreign, should dictate the policy of any nation. He emphasized that India welcomes competitive satellite internet options from both domestic and global providers, provided they offer practical and affordable solutions for remote communities. He noted that satellite broadband must bridge existing digital divides rather than introduce high subscription and equipment barriers for ordinary households.

Addressing the broader economic and security landscape, Haasan pointed out that national telecommunications infrastructure and spectrum management serve as vital strategic assets rather than simple commercial holdings, making security safeguards non-negotiable. He also drew comparisons to international practices, highlighting that Western nations often implement protectionist measures, such as United States tariffs on foreign electric vehicles and mutual restrictions on companies like Huawei, based on domestic interests.

Haasan stated that Indian citizens will continue to internally debate and resolve the nation's strengths and challenges through democratic processes. He pointed to ongoing public discourse surrounding domestic connectivity initiatives like BharatNet, where the public and audit reports scrutinize implementation efficiency, alongside the recognition that local telecom policies have successfully delivered some of the world's most affordable internet data.

Concluding his remarks, Haasan reiterated that India remains a self-determined democracy. While the nation welcomes global collaboration, the future will be decided by the Indian people themselves rather than by external vested interests, double standards, or outside billionaires.

Musk's initial claims arose as Starlink continues to await final security clearances and spectrum allocations from Indian authorities to begin commercial operations, having previously secured a Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite licence. In response to earlier allegations, India's Ministry of Communications issued a statement dismissing claims of a discriminatory regulatory framework as baseless and misconceived, affirming that the nation maintains a fair and non-discriminatory authorization process for all telecommunication services.
