New Delhi: Former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh expressed dissatisfaction with India's wrestling performance at the Asian Games, asserting that the country should target a larger medal haul in preparation for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. Speaking at a felicitation ceremony for the nation's medal-winning wrestlers in New Delhi, Singh stated that he had anticipated the contingent to secure at least eight medals during the continental competition.

India dispatched a 15-member wrestling squad to the Asian Games, finishing the event with six medals, which included two gold medals won by Aman Sehrawat and Sujeet Kalkal. Antim Panghal and Nitesh Siwach captured silver medals, while Deepak Punia and Sunil Kumar rounded out the total with bronze medals. Singh emphasized that the wrestling community needs to elevate its expectations, noting that single-digit medal counts should not satisfy the nation's potential.

The gathering in the capital also served to launch the sixth season of the Pro Wrestling League, scheduled to take place in New Delhi. During the ceremony, the six Asian Games medallists were honored with special kits and blazers. The event further highlighted discussions regarding financial incentives for successful athletes, with Singh arguing that competitors who earn glory for the country and the mentors who train them deserve substantial recognition from the federation.

Although Singh no longer holds a leadership position within the WFI, he maintained that the current administration should take responsibility for adequately rewarding the athletes. His appearance as the guest of honor highlighted his ongoing prominence within the sport's administrative circles despite stepping away from the federation's executive role. The upcoming season of the Pro Wrestling League is set to feature dozens of domestic and international grapplers across multiple Olympic weight classes, offering another competitive stage for Indian talent.
