The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay. The announcement was made on Friday in Oslo, honoring the former South African jurist for her lifelong work in promoting peace and international law.
Pillay, who was born into a family of Indian Tamil origin in Durban, was praised by the committee for her instrumental efforts in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide are successfully prosecuted on the global stage.
For this year's prize, the committee considered a total of 287 nominated candidates. Other widely discussed contenders prior to the announcement included the International Space Station, emergency rescue teams operating in Sudan, advocates for children in Ukraine, and two prominent international courts.
US President Donald Trump had also been frequently mentioned as a potential contender, having previously asserted that his diplomatic efforts made him deserving of the prestigious honor.
