The Jammu and Kashmir assembly recently adopted a resolution seeking the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood, marking the second such legislative push in a span of two years. This move serves both as a political reminder and a renewal of intent regarding the region's governance status.
The assembly session functioned partly as legislative theater aimed at ensuring the message resonated clearly in New Delhi. Overcoming the diminution of the region's status remains a goal supported by a broad consensus across Jammu and Kashmir.
Ever since the events of 2019, when Jammu and Kashmir lost its special status and was bifurcated into separate Union territories, the central government has consistently maintained that the Union territory arrangement is temporary. Officials in New Delhi have repeatedly characterized the eventual return of statehood as a solemn promise to be fulfilled at an appropriate time.
