Phalodi: A nine-year-old boy who fell into a borewell in Rajasthan's Phalodi district was brought out after a grueling 39-hour rescue operation but was declared dead after being rushed to a hospital, officials said. The boy had fallen into a 1,050-foot-deep borewell during repair work at a farm on Thursday and was believed to be trapped at a depth of around 640 feet.
The incident took place around 1:30 pm when workers were repairing a faulty borewell at the farm owned by the boy's father, Pancharam Bhil. As workers were pulling out pipes, the child accidentally slipped into the open borewell.
His father, who was removing the borewell motor at the time, witnessed the incident unfold. He reported that he turned around to find only his son's head and hands visible above the opening, and by the time he rushed to intervene, the boy had slipped further down the shaft.
Police and State Disaster Response Force personnel immediately reached the location to launch a rescue operation. They were subsequently joined by a team from the National Disaster Response Force based in Ajmer, which arrived at the site around 9 pm on Thursday.
Rescuers lowered a camera into the deep shaft to locate the child and assess his condition, while arrangements were simultaneously made to supply oxygen as teams worked relentlessly to reach him.
The extreme depth of the borewell and its narrow opening presented severe challenges for the emergency crews, who relied on continuous camera footage to track the boy's position. Following nearly 39 hours of intensive efforts, the child was ultimately extracted and transported to a hospital, where medical staff declared him dead.
