New Delhi: India's participation in the upcoming SAFF Championship remains uncertain as scheduling conflicts and player availability issues challenge the All India Football Federation. The national team's title defense hangs in the balance due to a proposed tour of New Zealand that directly clashes with the regional competition.
The SAFF Championship is scheduled to take place in Dhaka from November 4 to 17. India, the most successful team in the competition's history with nine titles, has been drawn into Group B alongside Pakistan and the Maldives. The current fixture list has India slated to face the Maldives on November 5 and Pakistan on November 11.
Complicating matters is India's planned tour to New Zealand, where the senior squad is expected to play two international friendlies on November 12 and 15. Those fixtures are intended to mark a century of sporting ties between the two nations and offer India a chance to play against New Zealand following their appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The core of the scheduling dilemma lies in the tournament's start date of November 4, which falls five days ahead of the FIFA international window opening on November 9. Because the tournament begins outside the official window, clubs are not obligated to release their players for the early matches, creating significant obstacles for squad assembly while the Indian Super League season is active.
While the AIFF had previously contemplated sending an under-23 team to Dhaka while the senior squad traveled to New Zealand, questions remain over whether SAFF would permit a youth side since the tournament is a FIFA Tier 1 event that impacts rankings. The timing is particularly notable because the regional championship was reportedly shifted from September to November specifically to accommodate India.
As the AIFF weighs its priorities between defending its regional crown and fulfilling commitments in New Zealand, no final decision has been announced. The federation must navigate club release rules, squad eligibility, and potential impacts on the tournament lineup as uncertainty continues to surround India's involvement.
