At 99 years old, Helga Duffy has taken high-flying adventure to a new level by becoming the world's oldest wing walker. The British resident secured the Guinness World Record after completing a remarkable flight strapped directly to the exterior of a small airplane, demonstrating that advanced age does not diminish a passion for thrilling experiences.
Wing walking places a participant outside an aircraft during flight, typically on the wings, utilizing specialized safety equipment and strict precautions. Duffy accomplished her record-setting flight at RFC Rendcomb Airfield located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. Currently residing in a care home in Devizes, Wiltshire, she previously lived for many years in Frome, Somerset. Beyond breaking the record, her endeavor generated funds for the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance.
Duffy was motivated to undertake the challenge after viewing news coverage of Betty Bromage, who previously held the record at 97 years of age. Watching Bromage inspired Duffy to pursue the feat herself. Reflecting on the flight, Duffy noted that she felt excitement rather than fear, describing the unique airborne sensation as peculiar.
As the eldest among seven siblings, Duffy contemplated how her late father might have viewed the accomplishment, believing he would have felt a sense of pride regarding her unconventional choice. Representatives from Guinness World Records presented her with an official certificate at the airfield following the landing, while her nieces, Jackie Rose and Julie Preece, observed the milestone.
Family members described Duffy as fiercely independent and noted her long-standing desire to pursue unique challenges to prove she remained true to herself. The fundraising aspect carried deep personal significance, as their mother had previously been transported by an air ambulance during a final journey. Representatives from the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance commended Duffy for her efforts, noting that she raised over £1,300 while thoroughly enjoying the adventure.
Meanwhile, the previous record holder, Bromage, offered her congratulations to the new record-setter. However, Bromage indicated she might attempt another wing walk upon turning 100 in hopes of reclaiming the title. For Duffy, the flight served as a fulfillment of a long-held ambition, a contribution to a vital charity, and a demonstration that a thirst for adventure has no age limit.
