An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a man in New York City on Thursday as he sat inside a vehicle with a five-year-old child, drawing intense outrage from local officials and triggering street demonstrations. Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the incident as an unconscionable situation, stating that preliminary reports indicated agents surrounded the man and the child in the Marble Hill neighborhood before multiple rounds were fired. The child was reported to be physically unharmed, while the injured man remained conscious and received medical care at a nearby hospital.
Following the shooting, protesters gathered in the evening to condemn the federal immigration crackdown, with some scuffles breaking out alongside police officers. City Council member Carmen De La Rosa expressed heartbreak and rage over the event. Speaking at the scene, Mayor Mamdani argued that the incident demonstrated how immigration agents operate with impunity and cause terror in communities, ultimately demanding that the agency be dismantled.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated that she spoke with President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to voice outrage on behalf of New York residents. Hochul urged officials to suspend local ICE enforcement operations and requested the immediate public release of any body-worn camera footage to clarify the facts.
The Department of Homeland Security defended the action by stating that officers were carrying out a targeted operation in the Bronx to arrest a 28-year-old Dominican national with a criminal record. According to the agency, an officer discharged a weapon, injuring the targeted individual, and an investigation is currently underway. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch explained that the man was parking when plainclothes federal officers approached with drawn weapons. Tisch added that the driver attempted to move the car forward before at least one officer fired seven shots, striking the man near his left ear.
The shooting occurred amid a backdrop of heightened scrutiny toward federal immigration enforcement. Earlier in the year, federal agents killed two United States citizens in Minneapolis, prompting nationwide protests, a significant expansion of ICE personnel, and substantial funding increases under the current administration.
