In a significant overhaul of standard caller identification procedures, authorities have ordered telecommunications operators such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL to show a caller's official registered name right next to their mobile number on incoming calls. Scheduled for rollout next month, the Calling Name Presentation system will debut on 4G and 5G mobile infrastructure, fetching user identities straight from official subscriber databases.
The core objective of this measure is to empower mobile phone owners to easily recognize unknown incoming numbers and successfully cut down on unsolicited marketing and spam calls originating from sectors like banking, insurance, and automobile companies.
Meanwhile, rolling out the same functionality across older 2G and 3G networks, as well as traditional landline connections, will be evaluated at a later date. Authorities are also continuing to formulate specific guidelines concerning potential privacy choices and options for callers.
