Tata Group-owned Air India has established a full-time, multidisciplinary team to systematically review expenditures and identify cost-saving opportunities throughout the airline. The initiative aims to embed a culture of frugality, accountability, and disciplined decision-making across all levels of the organization as carriers face a complex macroeconomic environment.
In an internal communication to staff, airline chief executive officer Tewolde Gebremariam emphasized that achieving financial resilience requires the active commitment of every employee rather than the work of a single department. He noted that ongoing industry challenges, including high oil prices driven by the West Asia crisis, airspace closures, and subsequent operational disruptions, continue to exert intense pressure on profit margins and fuel bills.
To support the newly formed cost-savings unit, the airline is introducing an employee recognition program called PRABHAV โ The Value Creator Award. This framework invites workers to submit proposals for cutting costs, boosting efficiency, optimizing contracts, minimizing waste, and identifying new revenue streams. Management indicated that submissions will undergo a structured evaluation, with successful ideas set to be officially recognized and rewarded.
In addition to the employee-driven innovation program, Air India has tightened its internal administrative controls by revising its staff on duty approval matrix. Effective October 1, related authorizations must route directly through department heads, chief experience officers, and the CEO to ensure heightened transparency, rigor, and strategic alignment.
Highlighting the broader economic context, the leadership team noted that every saved rupee provides an opportunity to reinvest in core operations, customer experience enhancements, and future growth foundations. The internal briefing also touched upon commercial updates, network developments, safety programs, and the winter schedule announcement for subsidiary Air India Express, which plans to scale operations to nearly 585 daily flights across 220 routes.
