A prison van believed to be transporting former Democratic Unionist Party leader Jeffrey Donaldson has arrived at Newry crown court ahead of his sentencing hearing. Donaldson, 63, has been held at Maghaberry prison in County Antrim while awaiting punishment for a string of historical sex offenses committed against two women during their childhoods. The offenses took place between 1985 and 2008.
Donaldson will appear before the court following his conviction earlier this year on 18 counts of sexual abuse, which included one count of rape alongside 13 counts of indecent assault and four counts of gross indecency. During a pre-sentencing hearing last month, prosecution counsel Rosemary Walsh read excerpts from victim impact statements. Complainant B detailed how the childhood abuse continued to impact her daily life, sometimes leaving her wishing she could die, while Complainant A expressed feelings of shame and anger after having her childhood stolen.
Defending counsel Kieran Vaughan acknowledged during mitigation that the former Lagan Valley MP was previously a man of good character who achieved significant things, though he conceded that the convictions completely obliterated those achievements. Judge Paul Ramsey has previously indicated that the offender would face a lengthy jail term. Donaldson previously led the DUP from 2021 until his arrest and subsequent charging in 2024, after which he was stripped of his knighthood and removed from the privy council.
Meanwhile, Donaldson's 60-year-old wife, Eleanor, was previously found unfit to stand trial on mental health grounds. Although a trial of the facts concluded she aided and abetted her husband's offending, she cannot receive a prison sentence and instead faces potential outcomes such as a treatment order or an absolute discharge, with the judge expected to rule on her case at a later date. She has also lodged an appeal to overturn the court conclusions.
