Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Dinesh Arya was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Uttarakhand, officials announced on Friday. The upcoming vacancy in the Upper House of Parliament arises as the term of incumbent MP Naresh Bansal is scheduled to conclude on November 25.
Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha Secretary Hem Pant confirmed that no alternative nominations were submitted for the seat. Pant stated that the administration received no filings other than the papers submitted by the BJP candidate, noting that Arya was officially presented with his election certificate at 3 p.m. on Friday.
Arya, a prominent Dalit leader hailing from the Kumaon region, currently functions as the vice-chairperson of the State Drinking Water Monitoring Committee. His past organizational experience includes holding the position of BJP district president for Nainital. Political analysts view his elevation to Parliament as part of the ruling party's strategic outreach to the Dalit electorate ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections planned for February.
The newly elected MP officially submitted his nomination paperwork on October 6, accompanied by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and state BJP president Mahendra Bhatt. Prior to the selection, the party's Uttarakhand core committee reviewed approximately two dozen potential contenders during a meeting on late September. A narrowed-down shortlist was subsequently compiled by Dhami, Bhatt, and state general secretary of organization Phanindra Nath Sharma before being forwarded to the central party leadership for final clearance.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress party chose to abstain from the electoral contest, pointing to its numerical disadvantage in the legislative assembly. State Congress vice-president Suryakant Dhasmana explained that the party currently holds 20 legislators, falling short of the required threshold to secure a victory, which led to the decision not to field a rival candidate.
