New Delhi: A detainee made a sudden dash for freedom after stepping off a police bus in Delhi, with several others seen following him out in a video captured during detentions ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s proposed protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Police personnel later rushed to the bus and shut its doors.
Delhi Police detained more than 3,000 protesters on Saturday as they tried to reach Jantar Mantar for the proposed demonstration. The detentions took place at several locations, including near Regal Cinema, Minto Bridge and Akashwani Bhawan.
Police sources said more than 600 people with criminal records were also detained across the capital as a preventive measure to avert any law-and-order situation. Drones were deployed to track movement, while security was tightened along routes leading to Jantar Mantar.
Police said permission had not been granted for the protest and appealed to people to comply with prohibitory orders in force in the New Delhi area. The CJP called the demonstration over allegations of voter-list manipulation during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and changes relating to Form 6, which is used for voter registration.
