New Delhi: Central Delhi experienced significant tension as heavy security deployments involving paramilitary forces and the Delhi Police were established across Connaught Place and all approaches to Jantar Mantar. Authorities implemented sweeping restrictions, ordering the closure of local shops, suspending internet services, sealing entry points, and shutting down forty-five metro stations to curtail the movement of demonstrators.
Despite the strict lockdown measures, groups of protesters and students managed to reach the area on foot from outlying neighborhoods, attempting to march toward Jantar Mantar. Demonstrators voiced slogans criticizing the administration before police forces, including specialized women officers, stepped in to detain numerous individuals across both inner and outer transit corridors.
The demonstrations were organized following a widespread call for a high-profile protest demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. A steady influx of participants had converged on the national capital to voice their grievances, resulting in the detention of hundreds of citizens alongside several prominent political leaders.
In the wake of the disruptions, opposition figures criticized the heavy-handed approach and raised concerns regarding the restriction of civil liberties. Meanwhile, government officials and representatives of the Bharatiya Janata Party held press briefings to defend the security response, asserting that the protest lacked official clearance and characterizing the demonstration as an unacceptable push toward anarchy.
