Chennai: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam president C Joseph Vijay over lunch at his Neelankarai residence in Chennai on Saturday. The meeting occurred amid ongoing opposition protests in New Delhi regarding electoral concerns and demands concerning the Chief Election Commissioner.

The discussions preceded Gandhi's youth outreach programme, titled Chhatron Ki Goonj or Maanavargalin Kural, at Chennai's Island Grounds. This marked the initial formal interaction between Gandhi and Vijay following the formal establishment of the Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance and TVK aligning with the broader opposition bloc.

Party sources indicated that the two leaders spent approximately an hour together discussing multiple political topics. Following the lunch session, Gandhi and Vijay stopped at a nearby cafe in Palavakkam where they enjoyed coffee and refreshments before Gandhi moved on to a city hotel.

The meeting carried notable political weight as the Congress party maintains its campaign focus on electoral issues, while TVK integrates into the regional and national opposition framework. Previously, Gandhi had attended Vijay's swearing-in ceremony as chief minister earlier in the year.

Following the political consultations, Gandhi proceeded to the Island Grounds to engage with students who registered for the open dialogue event. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee leaders noted that the gathering focused on concerns regarding competitive examinations, employment opportunities, and educational frameworks.

Local authorities implemented extensive five-tier security protocols throughout Chennai, deploying approximately 15,000 police personnel to manage both Gandhi's itinerary and concurrent high-profile schedules in the city. Access to the student event was strictly limited to registered attendees utilizing digital entry codes.
