Three former OpenAI researchers who were dismissed by the artificial intelligence firm for allegedly mishandling information maintain they were instead terminated because they raised internal safety concerns. Mikita Balesni stated on social media that the group was let go for prioritizing safety over the short-term corporate interests of OpenAI, sharing an open letter co-authored with fellow former employees.
An OpenAI spokesperson previously stated that an internal investigation confirmed these individuals mishandled sensitive information outside established company procedures. Research leaders at the firm reiterated these points in a note, emphasizing that the decisions were unrelated to raising safety concerns or speaking out, but rather stemmed from a significant breach of trust.
The joint letter to leadership was authored by Balesni, Tomek Korbak, and Jasmine Wang, who all previously worked in safety or alignment roles at the organization. Alignment involves embedding human ethical principles and ideas into technology to ensure it remains aligned with human values.
The former employees expressed concern that their dismissals have created an atmosphere where workers at the technology company are afraid to speak freely and operate in ways that were previously standard practice. Korbak stated that he had spent months raising safety issues regarding the diminishing ability to monitor the thoughts of AI agents, which he believes was the true reason for his termination.
OpenAI stated that it is currently finalizing contracts with independent third-party safety assessors and intends to share further details in the near future. Meanwhile, Wang warned that unless current employees take a stand against these actions, she is concerned they will not be the last to be pushed out under questionable circumstances.
