A 40-year-old head constable belonging to the Central Reserve Police Force's Rapid Action Force sustained splinter injuries after unidentified individuals hurled a hand grenade at an outpost in Manipur's Imphal East district on Thursday night, according to police statements released on Friday.
Law enforcement officials stated that the attack occurred at approximately 9 pm at the gate of the B/107 RAF unit situated at New Lambulane. The blast resulted in injuries to the abdomen of Dhananjoy Rai, a service member hailing from Uttar Pradesh.
The injured personnel was first rushed to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Science hospital located in Imphal East and was subsequently transferred to Shija Hospital, a private medical facility in Imphal West. Representatives from Shija Hospital reported that surgical procedures successfully removed the splinters, although the patient remains under observation in the intensive care unit on ventilator support.
Authorities indicated that the underlying motive behind the assault and the specific identity of the perpetrators remain undetermined at this stage. In response to the explosion, security forces secured the perimeter and executed a comprehensive search operation across the New Lambulane neighborhood starting early Friday morning, though officials confirmed that no suspects have been taken into custody so far.
This incident follows a previous security breach on September 10, when personnel from the paramilitary force were targeted by gunfire while patrolling along National Highway 2 at Khonghampat in the Imphal West district. Although that earlier shooting by the banned underground organization National Revolutionary Front of Manipur resulted in no injuries, subsequent investigations led to the apprehension of two cadres—a father and son duo—along with the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and ammunition.
