The Norwegian Nobel Committee has announced South African jurist Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay as the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless efforts to foster peace and uphold international law. The committee praised her dedication to universal legal principles, highlighting her historic work defending anti-apartheid figures such as Nelson Mandela, as well as her influential judicial service across major global tribunals.
Born in 1941 into a Tamil family of Indian origin, Pillay broke significant barriers throughout her career. She became the first non-white woman lawyer to set up a legal practice in Natal and subsequently the first non-white woman judge to serve on South Africa's High Court.
Her distinguished international career includes serving as the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, working as a judge at the International Criminal Court, and holding the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
