New Delhi: Indian cricket star Smriti Mandhana has expanded her public impact beyond the sports arena by joining UNICEF India as a celebrity advocate, where she will advocate for children's rights, gender equality, and equal access to opportunities for young girls. The prominent left-handed batter aims to leverage her public profile to spotlight challenges faced by youth and to foster an inclusive culture that allows every child to learn, play, and reach their full potential.

Mandhana's new role was warmly endorsed by veteran Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who serves as a UNICEF Regional Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia. Tendulkar, who has dedicated more than ten years to supporting UNICEF programs focused on children's health, education, and general welfare, expressed enthusiasm about her joining the organisation and stated his belief that she would serve as a compelling advocate for youth rights.

Reflecting on her own upbringing, Mandhana highlighted how familial encouragement shaped her path in sports. She recalled attending her initial cricket trials at age nine alongside her brother and noted the dedication required to manage both athletic ambitions and formal education with support from her parents. This personal history underscores her belief that every young girl should possess the liberty to select her own path and explore her capabilities without being constrained by societal limitations.

The announcement of her UNICEF partnership coincides with a major milestone in her athletic career. Earlier in October 2026, the Board of Control for Cricket in India named Mandhana as the captain of the national women's team, succeeding Harmanpreet Kaur across formats. She is set to launch her permanent white-ball leadership tenure during the upcoming home series against Zimbabwe.

Detailing her objectives with the organisation, Mandhana emphasized her commitment to building an inclusive society where children receive equal resources to thrive. Backed by Tendulkar's longstanding advocacy and her own expanding influence within international sports, her new platform aims to reinforce the principle that every child deserves unhindered opportunities to dream and succeed.
