Delhi Protests Intensify: Detentions at Connaught Place Amid Supreme Court Directives
Tensions intensified in the national capital following protests over alleged electoral roll irregularities. Left-wing student organisations, including AISA and SFI, launched a flash demonstration at Connaught Place, heading towards Jantar Mantar before being detained by Delhi Police, central paramilitary forces, and personnel requisitioned from Uttar Pradesh.
The development follows the earlier preventative detention of Cockroach Janata Party leaders and YouTuber Dhruv Rathee. The party accused authorities of illegal detention, procedural violations, and shielding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Concurrently, the Supreme Court directed authorities to review barricades across Delhi, restore internet connectivity, and ensure public transport is not entirely restricted. Emphasising that security measures must be proportionate without bringing normal life to a complete standstill, the court instructed officials to identify suitable sites for lawful demonstrations. While central Delhi routes experienced ongoing traffic diversions, standard operations including metro, rail services, and commercial establishments continued.
Separately, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the golden jubilee celebrations of Vishwa Hindu Vidya Kendra, recalling his prior meeting in Nagercoil with Girija Amma and young students. Describing her dedication, confidence, and devotion to the nation's future as leaving an indelible impression, Narendra Modi said her affection and his regard for the historic institution compelled him to accept the invitation to attend the milestone event. He congratulated the entire Hindu Vidyalaya family on completing 50 years of education and service.
Reflecting on its modest origins, he noted that the organisation began in 1975 in Chennai's West Mambalam as a small school with only seven students, devoid of modern amenities, a permanent building, or extensive resources. He emphasised that the unwavering willpower of its founders drove the institution forward.
