Richard E Grant has said his early exit from The Celebrity Traitors was due to his failure to realise his fellow contestants would take him seriously. The Withnail and I actor was voted off as a traitor after brazenly admitting his status to other participants.
Speaking to the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Grant said revealing his true identity so early was a mistake. He noted that he never thought anyone would take him seriously, calling it a completely catastrophically idiotic thing to do and imagining the producers looking at each other in disbelief. He added that having no strategy at all turned out to be a flawed approach.
He revealed that his daughter had warned him before filming began that he would be slaughtered because he was incapable of hiding his feelings about people. During the premiere episode, Grant seemed thrilled to be chosen as a traitor, but his enthusiasm got the better of him when comedian Joe Lycett asked him which side he was on.
When Grant confessed his traitor status, Lycett remarked that it was a bold strategy unlike anything seen in the game before. Reflecting on the moment, Grant admitted he should have handled it differently by joking around and claiming everyone was a traitor to make light of the situation, though he acknowledged that might have dug his grave even deeper.
Explaining the psychological impact of the production, he suggested that contestants were treated similarly to children and prisoners. He pointed out that within twenty-four hours participants become institutionalized due to isolation, having a guard outside the door, receiving delivered meals, and lacking internet access. Because they are not told the time and have their daily clothing prescribed, they feel infantilized and institutionalized simultaneously.
Grant also stated that he has chosen to avoid watching the series. He explained that as an actor it is very uncomfortable to watch oneself, and watching unscripted television leaves no place to hide because it represents the individual unequivocally.
