Bijnor (UP): Police have arrested a man in the Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh for allegedly using a loudspeaker above the prescribed volume limit while giving the azaan at a Najibabad mosque, according to authorities.
Police identified the detained individual as Mohammad Faizan, who was taken into custody on Saturday and subsequently remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. According to law enforcement officials, the intervention occurred after police received information regarding excessive noise levels coming from the religious site.
Superintendent of Police K K Vishnoi stated that Faizan was accused of exceeding permitted volume thresholds while delivering the azaan at a mosque located near the Government Inter College in Najibabad. Upon receiving reports about the violation, local police officers visited the premises to verify the sound output.
Sub-Inspector Saurabh Singh formally registered a complaint at the Najibabad police station, leading to Faizan's arrest. Following his apprehension, he was presented before the sub-divisional magistrate's court, which ordered his placement in judicial custody for two weeks.
The enforcement action arrives amid heightened regional monitoring of noise regulations. Earlier in October, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court took suo motu cognisance of the reported death of a young student in Balrampur who collapsed while a loud DJ procession passed her school. Although the court noted it had not reached a definitive conclusion regarding the child's cause of death, it emphasized that the tragedy highlighted serious concerns over noise pollution and the enforcement of statutory standards, directing authorities to submit comprehensive reports.
In September, the Bijnor local administration launched a broader enforcement drive targeting loudspeakers operating beyond permitted decibel levels at various religious institutions, which resulted in the removal of sound systems from multiple mosques, temples, and gurdwaras. The latest arrest in Najibabad reflects ongoing compliance efforts by district officials alongside wider judicial oversight concerning noise pollution regulations.
