New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani immersed himself in the celebrations of Navratri, taking part in a local Garba dance alongside members of the Hindu diaspora. Videos circulating on social media captured the mayor wearing a traditional dupatta as he joined the rhythmic steps, and later footage showed him receiving blessings from a temple priest during the festive gathering.
The clips highlight the vibrant community celebrations taking place across New York City as Indian diaspora groups come together to observe the holiday. In addition to participating in the dancing, Mamdani shared an official message on social media to extend his greetings to everyone observing Navratri, Durga Puja, and related seasonal festivals.
In his message, the mayor noted the rich variety of customs practiced by Hindu communities, mentioning events like Garba dancing, Sindur Khela, the receiving of Tika, and the arrangement of Golu displays in homes. He acknowledged that different families refer to the period by various names such as Durga Puja, Dashain, Dussehra, or Navratri, offering wishes for a meaningful season of reflection and renewal.
Festive events honoring Durga Puja, Navratri, and other autumn celebrations continue to be hosted by numerous Hindu organizations across New York City, New York state, and the wider United States.
