A former OpenAI engineer accused of concealing a recording device inside a San Francisco office conference room maintained connections to an individual close to the Saudi royal family, according to recent reports. The suspect, a Saudi national identified as Abdulrahman Alfozan, was arrested earlier this month following allegations that he utilized artificial intelligence tools to build encrypted listening devices and track meetings involving high-level executives, business partners, and government officials.
An eleven-page court filing from the US Justice Department revealed that the former employee exchanged WhatsApp messages with an unidentified Saudi royal who urged him to abandon his position in the United States and contribute to the kingdom's developing artificial intelligence sector. Prosecutors noted that the royal figure pressed the engineer to relocate, stating that Saudi Arabia needed him more than the US did. Alfozan reportedly agreed to the transition but indicated he would wait until his stock options had vested.
Investigators uncovered photographic evidence of specific office locations alongside internal digital searches concerning gatherings between OpenAI leadership and Saudi state officials. According to the court documents, notes indicated that the defendant intended to retrieve the recording apparatus prior to leaving the artificial intelligence firm. Government prosecutors emphasized that OpenAI executives held discussions with officials in that specific conference room around the time the device was installed, raising concerns that the actions could threaten United States national security.
Alfozan was taken into custody on October 9, just three days prior to his planned departure from San Francisco alongside his wife and infant son on a one-way flight bound for Riyadh. Despite his subsequent detention, authorities stated that his wife and three-month-old child ultimately traveled out of the country using business-class tickets funded by a Saudi military official. The former engineer remains in custody without bail awaiting trial and is scheduled to make a court appearance in November.
