John “Drew” Williams is running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Kentucky’s 1st Congressional District, positioning himself against entrenched Republican incumbent James Comer ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Williams secured the Democratic nomination after being the only candidate to file for the ballot, which canceled the May primary and allowed him to advance automatically.
At 34 years old, Williams is a lifelong Kentucky resident. Born in Paducah in McCracken County and raised in Benton in Marshall County, he is married and has a son. His decision to challenge Comer was driven by a desire to avoid last-minute candidate scrambles, prompting him to launch his preparation well in advance in May 2025. Williams also drew on his prior experience managing a U.S. House campaign for the same district in 2020, during which he observed a lack of energy from state and national parties in deeply red regions.
His campaign platform emphasizes the American Housing Promise, health insurance reform, tax policy, childcare networks, and data center regulation. By the end of September, Williams reported raising over $200,000, driving 145,000 miles, and hosting 180 public events across all 35 counties in the district. Despite operating a largely under-the-radar campaign with minimal mainstream polling, he believes his grassroots efforts have allowed him to outpace traditional campaign timelines.
Describing himself as a liberty-style econocrat, Williams centers his message on core principles of personal liberty, financial security, and the American dream. He stresses that his primary commitment is to the local electorate, stating that his constituents represent his sole special interest.
If elected, Williams envisions a framework of heightened accountability that includes regular town halls, community debates, and expert roundtables featuring live-streamed constituent feedback. Concluding his pitch to voters, he positioned himself as a dedicated statesperson and voice for the district rather than a conventional politician.
