New Delhi: The national capital has been placed under a massive security clampdown ahead of a planned protest by the CJP demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Over 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed, with 15 dedicated detention centres set up and the Delhi-Noida border sealed at the Chilla checkpoint.
Delhi Police invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita after denying permission for the demonstration. Sweeping restrictions include closures of metro stations, cancellation of trains, and curbs on app-based cabs and hotels. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court scrutinised the measures, refusing a blanket metro shutdown and calling for proportionality to avoid commuter inconvenience, while CJP leaders affirmed they will proceed with the demonstration.
Speaking at an event in Mumbai, representatives of the Cockroach Janata Party questioned the heavy security deployment and restrictions imposed ahead of their planned demonstration in Delhi. The speakers alleged that security forces were brought in from various regions, alongside transport disruptions affecting metro and railway routes, to prevent demonstrators from reaching the national capital.
Emphasising that Article 19 of the Constitution guarantees the democratic right to peaceful protest, the leaders argued that arbitrary curbs were being enforced in Delhi. They asserted that their agitation centres on allegations that the Election Commission is functioning to shield Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while criticising the Delhi Police for refusing to engage with organisers after receiving prior formal intimation.
