New Delhi: A delegation of opposition Members of Parliament belonging to the INDIA bloc marched from Parliament toward Rashtrapati Bhavan to meet President Droupadi Murmu. The ten-member delegation, carrying placards demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, included prominent leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, M.A. Baby, and Rajiv Ranjan.
According to participants, Delhi Police prevented the group from collecting the full complement of required signatures, forcing them to send a memorandum bearing ten signatures inside through Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
The high-profile march unfolded against the backdrop of a massive security clampdown across the national capital, as authorities braced for planned demonstrations. The heightened security measures included the temporary suspension of mobile internet services within a four-kilometre radius around key central zones, the closure of numerous metro stations, the cancellation of certain train services, and the deployment of over 20,000 security and paramilitary personnel.
While administration officials defended the sweeping restrictions as necessary for maintaining public order under applicable legal frameworks, critics and opposition figures condemned the heavy-handed measures, detentions, and transit shutdowns as an excessive restriction on democratic rights and mobility.
