Contracts valued at over Rs 1,900 crore have been finalized for domestic naval technologies under a Ministry of Defence initiative aimed at fostering self-reliance, according to announcements made by the Navy ahead of its upcoming innovation seminar, Swavlamban 2026. The fifth installment of the conference is planned for October 26 and 27 at the Manekshaw Centre, highlighting a core objective of transitioning promising technological innovations into operational-ready systems.
Through the Innovations for Defence Excellence framework, authorities have attracted more than 4,000 submissions from domestic developers, with participation spanning roughly 150 small and medium-sized enterprises and startups. Projects valued in excess of Rs 3,500 crore have successfully secured initial Acceptance of Necessity clearances within the procurement workflow.
Targeted innovations encompass quantum positioning systems, high-power microwave directed-energy weapons, extra-large autonomous underwater vehicles, and home-grown ramjet engines built for fixed-wing aircraft. Vice Admiral Ajay Kochar noted that unmanned technologies, artificial intelligence, modern sensors, and networked architectures are actively reshaping maritime conflict, emphasizing the Navy's objective to rapidly field dependable systems tailored for specific operational environments.
Integration initiatives will be guided by four foundational tenets: scale, sophistication, speed, and spiral development. The latter principle entails the continuous refinement of hardware through trials, direct user evaluations, and rapid technological upgrades. The upcoming two-day seminar anticipates drawing over 100 exhibition stalls, uniting representatives from the military, national security agencies, private industry, academic institutions, and investment sectors. Event participation has expanded significantly, moving from an initial attendance of approximately 800 individuals at the inaugural event to nearly 3,000 participants last year.
The scheduled program features a technology exhibition alongside panel discussions focused on successfully transitioning early-stage prototypes into mass production and active deployment. Additional conference tracks will address cybersecurity challenges, vulnerabilities within supply chains, and avenues for securing research, development, and manufacturing capital. Officials have called upon industrial partners and academic researchers to engineer robust solutions anchored in reliable manufacturing and punctual delivery schedules.
