Wokha: Lochumbeni K. Kikon, a Class 9 student hailing from Wokha in Nagaland, secured victory in a solo singing competition through her performance of the track She Taught Me To Yodels, widely recognized as The Yodelling Song.
The unique vocal style featured in her performance has drawn broader interest to the history of yodelling itself. Originating in the Central Alps centuries ago, yodelling is a traditional form of singing characterized by rapid and distinct shifts between low-pitch chest registers and high-pitch head tones.
Historically, this specialized technique was utilized by mountain herders as a practical method of long-distance communication across rugged peaks and valleys. The cultural significance of the practice received international recognition when yodelling was officially designated as part of the world's Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2025.
