Newdelhi,Oct 19, 2026 17:04 ISTJamia Millia Islamia has established a seven-level high-level committee to interact with protesting scholars, evaluate their requests, and restore order on campus, administration officials announced on Monday following a report by the Press Trust of India.
Students have staged demonstrations and an ongoing hunger strike to push for the reinstatement of the official student union, which was originally disbanded back in 2006. The demonstrations have renewed attention on the long-standing absence of formal student representation at the institution.
The administrative measure to create the panel was finalized during an executive meeting headed by Vice-Chancellor Mazhar Asif on Sunday night. The committee is formed by veteran deans and professors tasked with conferring with the demonstrators, resolving concerns, and maintaining campus harmony, according to an official university release.
The administration emphasized its dedication to settling the dispute via productive conversations built on shared trust, while urging cooperation from student agitators and the broader campus community. Officials noted that student elections were previously halted nearly twenty years ago due to frequent violent altercations, assaults on faculty members, and severe academic disruptions.
Furthermore, the university cited a 2002 Delhi High Court ruling that concluded the case without ordering the resumption of student union ballots. The current administration, in office since October 2024, reiterated its goal of navigating an amicable path forward.
To ensure continued representation, the institution pointed to its framework of departmental subject association polls, where learners use secret ballots to select vice-presidents, general secretaries, and joint secretaries. Authorities have called on all parties to preserve campus peace, safeguard the learning environment, and rely on the newly formed committee to address the ongoing demands.
