A tragic double murder-suicide in Marin County has claimed the lives of retired San Francisco Police Department Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, 65, and her 24-year-old daughter, Katherine Mannix. Investigators reported that Ann's husband, retired SFPD Sergeant Kevin Mannix, 68, shot both women inside their family residence on Strawberry Circle in the Strawberry neighborhood near Mill Valley before taking his own life on Sunday afternoon.
Deputies rushed to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. following a 911 emergency call reporting gunfire at the property. The caller managed to flee the home prior to law enforcement arrival. Upon entering the residence, deputies discovered three individuals dead from gunshot wounds.
Ann Mannix built a distinguished career as a pioneer within the police force. She made history as the first woman to join and eventually lead the department's SWAT unit. Continuing her advancement through the ranks, she ultimately achieved the position of deputy chief, supervising both field operations and special operations bureaus prior to her retirement in 2021.
Friends and acquaintances shared their grief over the violent deaths. Family friend and former congressional candidate Marie Hurabiell noted that Ann had recently been navigating a divorce. Hurabiell recalled that despite the challenges of the separation, Ann had been optimistic and full of life.
The San Francisco Police Officers Association released a statement expressing deep shock and sorrow regarding the incident, emphasizing the profound impact the loss has had on the broader law enforcement community. The association reiterated Ann Mannix's legacy as a departmental pioneer who paved the way for women in specialized tactical roles.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie also issued a statement honoring the former deputy chief's decades of public service and leadership. Officials confirmed that the local community faces no active danger, while investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and work to determine a motive.
