The Madras High Court on Tuesday, October 13, granted interim protection against the unauthorised online exhibition of the Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer 2, just two days prior to its scheduled theatrical premiere. The court order restricts the illegal streaming or broadcasting of the movie across various websites and digital channels in order to safeguard the copyright of the filmmakers. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the feature is a follow-up to the successful 2023 action film.
Justice PB Balaji issued the injunction in response to a lawsuit brought by Sun TV Network Limited, the Chennai-based studio backing the project. Furthermore, the court instructed its registry to issue an official web copy of the ruling by the close of Tuesday, enabling the production house to notify service providers promptly before the motion picture arrives in cinemas on October 15.
During the proceedings, counsel for the production company, Rahul Balaji, requested an expedited copy of the directive, highlighting that bootlegged copies frequently appear online within thirty minutes of a global premiere. Counsel stressed that the formal order was vital for alerting telecommunications firms, cable providers, and other digital intermediaries to stop any unlawful dissemination.
The studio initiated a John Doe lawsuit, a legal mechanism designed to protect against unknown parties suspected of violating copyright laws. This temporary injunction is structured to curb digital piracy and unauthorised sharing of the feature film.
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the upcoming movie brings back Rajinikanth as the retired law enforcement officer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian for another confrontation with criminal syndicates. The star-studded cast features prominent actors including Vijay Sethupathi, SJ Suryah, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Ramya Krishnan, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Yogi Babu, and Hrithik Roshan. Backed by Sun Pictures, the project is set to hit the big screen on October 15, 2026.
