Reliance Jio has expanded its digital services portfolio with the introduction of JioPC, a service designed to transform sluggish or outdated laptops and televisions into high-performance computers. Aiming to make advanced computing more accessible for students, families, and educational institutions, the computer-as-a-subscription model offers a cost-effective alternative to purchasing expensive new hardware.
JioPC functions by running a virtual computer over the internet, eliminating the need to upgrade physical components on older machines. Users can access the cloud-based environment using an existing Windows or Mac computer, a compatible monitor, or a television connected to a Jio Set-Top Box. Operation requires only a standard web browser and a stable broadband, 4G, or 5G internet connection, as all heavy data processing and storage take place on Jio cloud servers.
The platform operates on an Ubuntu-based Linux operating system and comes pre-loaded with essential productivity software like LibreOffice. Additionally, users can access online applications such as Microsoft 365 and design utilities like Adobe Express through a web browser. The service is built to handle demanding workloads suitable for online learning, coding, research, graphic design, and generative artificial intelligence tools that typically overwhelm older hardware.
Security is addressed through a Zero Trust framework that stores all user information in cloud storage rather than on local equipment. Backed by enterprise-grade infrastructure and disaster recovery protocols, files remain secure even if the physical local device suffers damage or hardware failure.
Jio utilizes a configurable computing model with subscription tiers based on memory and storage requirements. The JioPC Standard plan provides 4 CPU cores, 8GB of RAM, and 500GB of storage, priced at Rs 1,000 for two months, Rs 2,000 for five months, and Rs 4,000 for a 12-month annual package consisting of 10 months plus two bonus months.
For heavier computing needs, the JioPC Ultra tier offers 8 CPU cores, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage for Rs 1,200 for two months, Rs 2,500 for five months, and Rs 5,000 for the 12-month package. Furthermore, eligible JioHome broadband customers can apply a Rs 100-per-month Jio Home voucher toward their internet bill to reduce the effective cost of the service.
