Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar stated that she will not be silenced and described a federal search of her Washington, DC, home as part of an intimidation campaign by President Donald Trump. The Democratic representative, known as a vocal critic of the administration, asserted that she is being targeted as a political enemy of the president.
The development follows remarks made by Trump during a campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio, where he criticized Omar and referred to Somalia, her birthplace, as one of the worst countries on the planet. During the event, Trump urged his supporters to vote Republican to prevent other states from facing the same trajectory as Minnesota, prompting chants of deportation from the crowd.
According to the Justice Department, US authorities carried out a predawn raid at Omar's residence on Monday as part of an ongoing investigation. An individual familiar with the matter indicated the probe relates to alleged immigration fraud, specifically focusing on immigration paperwork completed by the lawmaker's late father when she was a child.
In response, Omar stated on social media that the federal government is being weaponized against political opponents. She noted that she has faced years of smear campaigns and described the raid as an escalation of political pressure, emphasizing her refusal to be silenced.
Top congressional Democrats, including House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, issued a statement calling the raid deeply disturbing and raising serious questions about the use of federal agencies against political adversaries.
In separate developments, a federal judge in New York ordered the Trump administration to temporarily halt taxpayer-funded television advertisements promoting the president ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Additionally, New York officials addressed a recent immigration enforcement shooting in Manhattan, a Kansas senator settled a years-old bakery debt, and a businessman wanted in connection with Venezuelan state contracts was taken into federal custody.
