For actor Divyenndu, playing the volatile and unpredictable Munna Tripathi in the hit series Mirzapur has brought about some unexpected perks in real life. The actor shared that his famous on-screen persona has occasionally helped him navigate sticky situations, particularly when dealing with enthusiastic fans or sudden law enforcement checks.
Speaking during an appearance at a major media conclave, the 43-year-old actor recalled an incident while shooting in Lucknow during the CAA protests. With tensions rising, the crew was instructed to return to their hotel, which was located just 200 metres away, only to find their path blocked by a police barricade.
When the driver attempted to explain that their destination was right in front of them, police initially insisted they turn around and leave immediately. However, once Divyenndu rolled down his window and appealed to the officer, the situation shifted instantly. Recognizing the actor as his character, the officer simply told them to let him through without exchanging any further pleasantries.
Divyenndu noted that he occasionally has to draw upon Munna's intimidating aura when dealing with crowds or fans whose expressions of affection become overwhelming. By switching on his internal character persona and giving a specific look, he can effectively defuse over-the-top encounters and keep trouble at bay.
The enduring popularity of Munna Tripathi recently translated to the big screen as well, with the character returning for Mirzapur: The Movie. Released in theaters, the feature brought together familiar cast members including Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, and Rasika Dugal, drawing strong commercial returns and demonstrating the franchise's successful crossover from streaming to cinemas.
Reflecting on the broader impact of streaming platforms, Divyenndu stated that OTT services have significantly evolved the language of Indian filmmaking. He contrasted the formulaic, predictable structure of older commercial films to a set meal where every element was predetermined, praising streaming networks for paving the way for authentic stories and complex, flawed characters.
Divyenndu emphasized that audiences today are increasingly discerning, meaning that mere availability on a platform does not guarantee viewership. True originality and authentic storytelling remain highly valued by viewers across both streaming services and the big screen.
Alongside his breakout role in Mirzapur and the subsequent film adaptation, Divyenndu has built a diverse career spanning comedy, drama, and crime across cinema and streaming projects. From his early recognition as Liquid in Pyaar Ka Punchnama to roles in films like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Madgaon Express, the actor continues to balance his extensive filmography while acknowledging the unique cultural footprint left by Munna Bhaiya.
