New Delhi: Harbhajan Singh believes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can reach extraordinary heights, but says talent alone will not be enough. The former India spinner wants the teenage prodigy to idolise Virat Kohli and learn from the discipline, focus, and priorities that shaped his career.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's extraordinary hitting ability has already drawn comparisons with some of India's greatest batters, but Harbhajan believes the teenager needs more than natural ability to fulfil his potential. Speaking on a digital platform, the former spinner praised the 15-year-old's unique skill set while stressing the importance of discipline and clear priorities, suggesting that Kohli's youthful approach offers a dependable blueprint.

Harbhajan noted that Kohli successfully channelled his energy from a young age, recommending that Sooryavanshi look up to icons like Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Anil Kumble. He pointed out that these legends directed their focus exclusively toward cricket without getting sidetracked by outside distractions, emphasizing that understanding priorities is crucial for the youngster to justify his immense talent.

Drawing direct comparisons, Harbhajan remarked that Sooryavanshi possesses qualities akin to what Tendulkar exhibited in his teens, adding that he has never witnessed such striking ability at such a tender age. Despite his excitement, the former cricketer cautioned that failure to reach the top would ultimately stem from a lack of proper direction, praising the remarkable clarity in the teenager's vision.

Sooryavanshi's domestic and franchise performances have strongly advocated for his inclusion, though securing a regular spot in India's competitive T20I top order remains a challenge. Following his senior international debut against England in July 2026 where he accumulated 42 runs across three matches, he delivered a stellar performance on the Zimbabwe tour by smashing 151 runs at a strike rate of 196.10. However, selectors subsequently preferred established names like Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, leaving the youngster on the sidelines during the Afghanistan and West Indies series.

India coach Gautam Gambhir previously clarified that bypassing the teenager was not a reflection of his capabilities, but rather a decision to back consistent performers who currently hold priority in the selection queue.

The hype surrounding Sooryavanshi is supported by stellar numbers, notably his 439 runs in seven matches at the 2026 Under-19 World Cup, which featured a remarkable 175-run knock off 80 deliveries against England in the final. The primary hurdle now lies in translating junior success to senior international cricket against fiercer competition.

Ultimately, Harbhajan's advice does not aim to rush the youngster into instant perfection, but rather encourages him to pair his raw gifts with the dedication and lifestyle habits necessary for a long and successful career.
