Enzo Maresca’s first public appearance since Manchester City were found guilty on virtually all counts of breaching Premier League financial rules was carefully managed, aside from a brief slip of the tongue during his opening answer. During a pre-emptive PR move on Thursday, the club had Maresca state on their internal channels that he was aware of the surrounding noise. By Friday, the Etihad Campus played host to a media conference with around 45 attendees, roughly three times the normal turnout, where the Italian manager was questioned about the widespread anger directed at the club.
When asked if his previous comments dismissed the public frustration over the situation, Maresca initially replied that he understood the presence of the media, noted an ongoing process, and stated that he completely trusted the club in that moment. Prompted to clarify whether his stance might change in the future, he corrected himself to emphasize that his trust was absolute across all timeframes. Throughout the session, clearly guided by the media department, he adhered strictly to a party line expressing confidence in a leadership group led by chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak and chief executive Ferran Soriano.
The media officer intervened only once, when a question arose regarding whether al-Mubarak or Soriano should have faced the press instead of the manager. The session was steered back toward previewing the upcoming weekend fixture away to Liverpool, with Maresca reminding journalists of the game's context. The independent commission's findings and subsequent statements from the Premier League had raised concerns within the club that emotive language would dominate the briefing, though the 16-minute exchange ultimately proceeded without hostile framing, and the customary embargoed section for a Sunday match was omitted.
Maresca addressed Soriano’s assertion that the commission’s opinion supported a conspiracy theory, reiterating his 100% confidence in the owners, CEO, sporting director, and the entire organization as his primary reason for joining the club. The conversation later shifted to standard football matters, including an update on Erling Haaland after the striker requested a substitution during international duty with Norway. Maresca confirmed that Haaland had recovered following a brief trip to Marbella and was fully prepared for the trip to Anfield.
Heading into Sunday's fixture at the top of the table with maximum points from five games, Manchester City anticipate a hostile atmosphere from the home supporters. Maresca acknowledged the challenging environment but emphasized that the squad is focused on the task ahead, relying on the passion of their traveling fans while maintaining confidence derived from their strong start to the campaign.
