New Delhi: The Indian Olympic Association will hold elections for its new Executive Council on December 5, occurring just five days prior to the expiration of the current committee's mandate. The electoral timeline commenced with the designation of former Election Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Srivastava as the returning officer, placing administrative governance under close observation as India actively pursues its ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
Srivastava, a retired IAS officer who previously functioned as Election Commissioner for Delhi and Chandigarh, will supervise the upcoming ballots for the Executive Council, the Athletes' Commission, and the Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit category. IOA president PT Usha noted that the vote represents a critical juncture for reinforcing effective governance, accountability, and transparency across the national sporting movement, aiming to establish resilient institutions aligned with the Olympic Charter.
The initial major vote on the calendar focuses on the IOA Athletes' Commission, with polling, vote counting, and the announcement of outcomes set for November 3. National Sports Federations face a deadline to put forward two athlete representatives through their respective commissions, with the resulting body mandated to feature ten elected members split evenly between men and women.
The upcoming leadership transition coincides with India's ongoing bid to stage the 2036 Olympic Games in Ahmedabad. Operating under the proposed vision of Rising Together, the initiative seeks to broaden athletic participation and community involvement, positioning India among several international contenders currently engaged in dialogue with the International Olympic Committee.
