Actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan’s upcoming film Udta Teer has been denied permission for public screening in Nepal ahead of its scheduled theatrical release. The decision was taken after Nepal’s Central Film Censor Board found that the film’s content fell under the restrictions specified in the country’s cinema law.
An official letter issued by Nepal’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to film distributor National Cine Group Nepal states that the film cannot be publicly screened under Section 8(3) of the National Cinema (Production, Exhibition and Distribution) Act, 2026.
The letter states that the film was examined by the Central Film Censor Board on the basis of the material submitted for review. The board found that its content came under the category restricted by the law and, therefore, decided not to grant permission for public exhibition. Udta Teer was scheduled to release in cinemas on Friday and is directed by Aakash Kaushik.
Reports indicate that Udta Teer deals with tensions between India and Pakistan. The film’s subject is believed to have prompted the censor board’s decision, although the ministry’s letter does not specify the exact scenes or content that led to the restriction.
Nepal’s cinema laws include provisions that can restrict films if their content is considered to affect the national interests or communities of a country. The film has consequently not been granted permission for public screening in Nepal, leaving its release uncertain. Udta Teer stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan in the lead roles and is slated to release in India on October 23.
