At least 109 migrants, including 15 children, lost their lives and more than 116 others remained unaccounted for after a vessel carrying roughly 350 people overturned while attempting to travel from Djibouti to Yemen. The International Organization for Migration reported the figures, noting that over 80 individuals survived the maritime disaster. All known survivors are Ethiopian nationals.
The shipwreck occurred near Guhere, located north of the Djiboutian port town of Obock, during the night of October 8 and 9. According to accounts gathered from survivors by the United Nations migration agency, the craft was severely overcrowded when it capsized.
The exact circumstances leading up to the tragedy remain under review, and comprehensive details about the voyage have yet to be fully established. Representatives for the Ethiopian government did not immediately provide a statement regarding the incident.
