New Delhi: Popular online educator Yashoda Lodhi, the driving force behind the Instagram and YouTube presence known as 'English with Dehati Madam', is steadily reshaping conventional perceptions of rural women through her polished English lessons and strong vocabulary. Despite completing her education only up to the twelfth grade at a Hindi-medium school, Yashoda possesses language skills that rival those of many city-educated individuals. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi district, she has built a following of over 725,000 on Instagram, recently capturing the attention of global star Priyanka Chopra, who shared one of her educational videos.
Reflecting on her beginnings, Yashoda shared that her early attempts at recording videos were marked by hesitation, stammering, and difficulty speaking smoothly in front of a camera. Today, she uses that exact experience to instruct children on how to communicate with self-assurance. Growing up in Punjab where her parents had relocated for employment, she currently lives in a rural household in Uttar Pradesh, dividing her time between recording lessons, managing domestic chores, and contributing to agricultural labor. Her transition into digital education was unplanned, driven by financial strains and a firm belief that women should be able to economically support their families.
Financial hardships intensified for Yashoda's household following a period of debt from their wedding, further compounded by an accident involving her husband that limited his daily earnings to a small fraction. Their financial burdens deepened due to medical expenses and a devastating fire that destroyed a portion of their wheat crop. Confronted with these mounting challenges, she began searching for a way to earn a living from home without abandoning her domestic obligations. The turning point arrived with a smartphone gifted to her during Diwali in 2021, which she initially used to learn basic household skills like cooking and sewing before discovering how content creation platforms operated.
Her first digital venture involved a motivational channel featuring voiceovers of well-known speakers, but she soon sought a project that would allow her to stand out rather than follow general trends. This realization inspired her to launch her English-language channel in late 2022. By embracing the term 'Dehati', which is frequently used to imply a lack of sophistication or urban education, Yashoda consciously reclaimed the label to challenge cultural biases and demonstrate that geography does not limit capability or ambition.
