Noida Police have initiated legal action against two identified individuals and other unknown account holders on the social media platform X for allegedly propagating unverified claims regarding the detention of YouTuber Dhruv Rathee. Investigators stated that the online posts were deliberately designed to trigger public panic and undermine local law and order within the district.
Law enforcement clarified that Dhruv Rathee was never taken into custody by their department, noting that no such updates were ever issued through official communication channels. The police formally registered an FIR at the Sector 39 police station, invoking relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita addressing imputations prejudicial to national integration and statements conducive to public mischief, alongside Section 67 of the Information Technology Act.
According to the official police complaint filed by sub-inspector Sunil Kumar, certain social media profiles attempted to destabilize the local peace on October 16 through coordinated messaging. The initial FIR highlighted specific fabricated statements, including assertions that tough days were ahead for the commentator following an alleged arrest by Noida Police over videos concerning religious figures and governance. Another circulating post claimed that the YouTuber had been detained without the expectation of leniency.
Authorities immediately moved to fact-check and dismiss the claims after they began circulating online mid-October. Investigators noted that generating and sharing such provocative narratives fostered unwarranted fear and hostility toward state administration, effectively attempting to manipulate public sentiment.
Police officials cautioned the public against relying on unverified digital posts, reminding citizens to seek information exclusively through official channels to prevent the rapid spread of rumors that threaten community harmony. Meanwhile, background context indicates that Rathee had traveled to Delhi recently to participate in demonstrations, following a prior brief detention by Gurugram Police earlier in the month.
