Heavy rainfall pounded Chennai as the northeast monsoon intensified across Tamil Nadu, triggering severe waterlogging and major traffic congestion in several parts of the city. The continuous downpour through the night and into Sunday morning flooded numerous roads, particularly in North Chennai, where residents faced significant commuting difficulties after the area recorded between 6 cm and 10 cm of rainfall in less than an hour.

The adverse weather also affected aviation infrastructure, with heavy rains enveloping the Chennai airport and causing light flooding on the ramp areas. Visuals shared across social media platforms captured the extent of the inundation in residential neighborhoods and public spaces, prompting widespread expressions of frustration among local residents.

In response to the mounting waterlogging, civic authorities stepped up emergency preparations by deploying more than 15,000 sanitation and municipal workers overnight to clear blocked roads and manage drainage complaints. Additionally, the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Response Force positioned 100 personnel as a precautionary measure, while both state and national disaster response units remain on standby to assist if weather conditions deteriorate further.

Meteorological officials note that the heavy showers stem from the active northeast monsoon, which officially commenced over Tamil Nadu on October 17, alongside a cyclonic circulation over north Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh and an associated weather trough. This seasonal rainfall pattern is vital for the region, which relies heavily on the October-to-December monsoon period for its annual water supply.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert indicating heavy rainfall ranging from 6 cm to 11 cm, remaining in effect through October 23 with very heavy spells anticipated until October 21. Widespread precipitation is projected to affect multiple districts, including Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, and several others, potentially causing continued disruptions to daily activities and transport.

Authorities have released safety advisories urging residents to exercise extreme caution while traveling through waterlogged areas, avoid crossing flooded streets, and remain indoors during severe thunderstorms and lightning activity.
