An hour of rainfall, narrow entry and exit paths in a cramped bylane, an absence of effective crowd management, and a microphone announcement warning of a potential structural collapse combined to cause a deadly stampede at a Kolkata Durga Puja pandal in Chore Bagan, resulting in 19 fatalities. Preliminary statements from local law enforcement and accounts from multiple eyewitnesses point to a convergence of factors that triggered the disaster during the peak of the festival season.
The fatal incident took place around 7:30 pm at one of the city's oldest and most popular celebration venues in north Kolkata, situated less than two kilometers from the Howrah Bridge. Authorities have arrested seven individuals in connection with the event. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team to be headed by a sitting judge of the Calcutta high court, while political opponents claimed that organizers linked to the ruling party were being shielded.
Eyewitnesses reported that continuous rain drove large numbers of devotees into the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal seeking shelter. Individuals who had already found cover refused to exit the structure, even as additional crowds pushed inward through both designated entrances and exits. Within moments, people lost their footing and tumbled over one another, initiating a severe human cascade.
An eyewitness named Vinay Kumar noted that despite active police presence, the sheer volume of people made the situation unmanageable during the sudden downpour. Another local resident, Uttam, mentioned that community members and civil volunteers rushed to assist with rescue efforts and hospital transport once the emergency unfolded, aided by local political representatives.
Visual evidence from the location highlighted the restricted nature of the gates and the approach road leading to the pandal. Social media footage posted by an Instagram user days prior to the tragedy illustrated the structural layout, showing a wide initial space narrowing into a confined passageway barely wide enough for three people before curving toward the deity.
Visitors and residents also criticized the crowd management, pointing to confusing public announcements regarding movement directions and an alleged lack of sufficient police personnel near general public access points. Local inhabitants argued that the severe bottlenecks and administrative disarray directly exacerbated the crisis as panicked crowds attempted to navigate the narrow corridors.
