Newdelhi,Oct 16, 2026 13:16 IST The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear an application alleging that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi pushed a pregnant journalist during a march to the court premises on October 12.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi scheduled the application to be heard on either October 26 or October 27.
Senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia mentioned the matter before the bench, stating that the application had been filed within an existing pending petition. He told the court that a female journalist was manhandled on the court premises.
This development follows a hearing on Thursday where the Supreme Court addressed several legal challenges related to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, protests across Delhi, the October 12 demonstration at the court, and reported altercations involving journalists and legal professionals. During that session, the court ordered that no coercive measures be taken against a female journalist facing a police complaint filed by a Delhi Police officer who alleged she made casteist remarks and publicly humiliated him during a demonstration near Jantar Mantar.
During Friday's proceedings, Bhatia pressed the bench to also take up the case of the pregnant journalist who was allegedly shoved by Gandhi within the court precincts during the October 12 rally. He claimed the reporter was three months pregnant at the time and required hospitalisation following the incident, urging the court to formally take cognisance of the matter.
The October 12 march saw Gandhi, multiple high-ranking opposition leaders, and their supporters arrive at the Supreme Court to submit a petition concerning purported widespread voter list deletions and procedural anomalies in the revision of electoral rolls. The capital has recently seen various demonstrations calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over these disputed irregularities.
Earlier on Thursday, the Supreme Court issued formal notices to Rahul Gandhi, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, and the Congress party in connection with a separate petition challenging the legality of the October 12 march. The newly admitted application addressing the alleged incident involving the pregnant journalist will be reviewed when the court reconvenes on October 26 or 27.
