OpenAI has released a significant software update that integrates ChatGPT directly with the Google Chrome browser, allowing the artificial intelligence chatbot to inspect open tabs, read on-screen data, and execute tasks on behalf of the user. In addition to the browser integration, the company has deployed a major upgrade to its voice features, expanding language support and introducing multiple new voice options.
The updated system functions through two primary mechanisms designated as Chat mode and Work mode. In Chat mode, ChatGPT reviews active tabs to gather and synthesize relevant information without requiring the user to switch between windows. Users can request the AI to compare products across multiple retail sites, summarize articles, or evaluate subscription services.
Work mode expands these capabilities by granting the AI active control over the browser environment. Under this setting, the assistant can complete registration forms, compose and send emails, download files, organize cluttered tab groups into structured categories, and compile cross-site data into comparison sheets.
To utilize the new integration, users are required to run the ChatGPT desktop application, enable the Computer Use feature within the settings, and install the official ChatGPT extension from the Chrome Web Store. Once configured, users can initiate a Work mode session, type the designated symbol to select the browser, and input specific commands. The integration is also compatible with other Chromium-based browsers such as Microsoft Edge, Brave, and Opera.
Security analysts advise caution when granting artificial intelligence tools access to active browsing sessions. Because the software can read visible screen contents, users are discouraged from keeping sensitive platforms open, such as online banking portals or private email accounts, while the tool is active. OpenAI has incorporated safeguards that require user authorization before the AI interacts with unfamiliar websites or downloads files, though potential risks remain regarding malicious inputs.
Concurrently, OpenAI launched an update designated as GPT-Live-1.1 across ChatGPT, Codex, and Dots. The release introduces thirteen new voice options and refines performance across several languages, including Hindi, French, German, Mexican Spanish, Korean, and Japanese, to deliver more natural conversational interactions for non-English speakers.
