Thiruvananthapuram: Keralam Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala condemned the alleged mob lynching of an unidentified man in Palakkad district and announced that seven suspects had been taken into custody. A 10-member special investigation team has been established to probe the killing, while active efforts continue to identify the victim, who is estimated to be between 35 and 40 years old.

Addressing the state Assembly in response to a submission, Chennithala characterized the incident as extremely brutal and condemnable, stating that such cruelty has no place in a progressive state. He assured lawmakers that every individual involved in the crime would face prosecution. Because the attack occurred in a village bordering Tamil Nadu, the minister directed the Additional Director General of Police for Intelligence to coordinate with Tamil Nadu counterparts to help establish the victim's identity. According to reports, the man's body sustained roughly 52 injuries during the assault.

The case came to public attention when residents discovered the body on Sunday morning near the Moolathara dam, close to Meenakshipuram. Investigators initially recorded the matter as an unnatural death, but a review of CCTV footage and new evidence uncovered that a group had targeted the man with stones and wooden sticks. Murder charges and other relevant provisions were subsequently added to the case file.

According to findings shared by the minister, the victim had allegedly exposed himself in front of local women, which triggered the violent reaction from the attackers. However, officials emphasized that the legal system exists to handle such infractions and that vigilante violence cannot be tolerated. A post-mortem examination conducted at Thrissur Medical College Hospital previously confirmed clear indicators of homicide. Although the victim had been spotted wandering the border region for a period, his name and background remain unconfirmed.

The Saturday assault marks the third reported instance of mob violence in Palakkad in recent years. Officials pointed back to the 2018 killing of Madhu, a tribal youth from Attappadi beaten over suspected food theft, as well as a December 2025 incident where a man from Chhattisgarh was lynched over theft suspicions under the Walayar police jurisdiction. Seven arrests have been made so far as the newly formed special investigation team pursues the ongoing murder investigation.
